Online-Shopaholics Anonymous

Road Trip Wednesday is a ‘Blog Carnival,’ where the contributors over at YA Highway post a weekly writing- or reading-related question. Then readers answer it on their own blogs. You can hop from destination to destination and get everybody's unique take on the topic.

This week's question: Where do you buy most of your books? No one is judging!

I am addicted to online shopping. At the end of every month, my recycling bin is full of boxes from Amazon--book-shaped boxes. I used to do most of my book shopping at Borders, but we all know what happened there. And let's be honest, I can afford a whole lot more books by shopping at Amazon.

I'd like to support more local bookstores, but it's so much easier to order from my living room or kitchen or wherever my laptop happens to be.

A lot of people stigmatize Amazon, but I love it. And I'm not afraid to admit it.

Where do you shop?

  1. I also buy a lot on amazon. While living in the US, I used to go the B&N quite a lot (and Target, and Safeway...and...and). Now in Germany, I try to read as much in English as possible and online shopping makes it much easier :-)

  2. Obviously Amazon does something right, otherwise they'd be out of business. And while I know they are exerting a growing influence in the publishing industry that's not always positive, they deserve a place in the market like everyone else. And when money is tight, as long as they come up with great deals, we'll continue giving them business. That might be tough on indies and brick-and-mortar. But I think this just means the indies and brick-and-mortar need to re-think their business strategies.

  3. I'm over online shopping, but that's because it's such a heartbreaking experience in Canada.

  4. I do too! My house is filled with Amazon boxes, not just from buying books but pretty much anything else. Aside from the price, as you mention, it's a lot easier to buy online than go out to a store. I definitely make more spontaneous book purchases online because I can read a review and then quickly buy a book. Triple that idea and you have my Nook book buying habits.

  5. I end up using Amazon a lot because the college that I go to is in the middle of a Midwestern wilderness and going to the bookstore would require walking a long long way in the snow. Online shopping is so much easier and can be done from the comfort of a warm room.

  7. I do enjoy shopping at Amazon, but it's so easy to keep "adding to my cart!"
