Road Trip Wednesday: Images and Imagination

Road Trip Wednesday is a ‘Blog Carnival,’ where the contributors over at YA Highway post a weekly writing- or reading-related question. Then readers answer it on their own blogs. You can hop from destination to destination and get everybody's unique take on the topic.

This week's question: What images inspire/represent your WIP or favorite book?

For me, every story I've ever written has started with the characters. they've come to me in one form or another--an image, a thought, a look in their eyes--and then I knew I had to write a story about them. Here's a picture that inspired Vic, the MC in my current WIP (which I've recently started rewriting!):

Visit Kennedy Noel's site here.

This beautiful girl is Kennedy Noel, a friend and teenage musical artist. The hair, the makeup, the clothes, everything here except for the guitar pick earring just screams Vic. I love when I find something like this.

The next picture doesn't remind me of any particular scene or character, but I feel like it really captures the  feeling you get (or I want my reader to get) at the beginning of the WIP. Vic is getting ready to finally come into herself, to define herself. I think this feeling is at the heart of most YA literature.

This is from my honeymoon in Kauai.

What pictures have inspired your WIP or represent your favorite book?

  1. That's great that you've found such strong inspiration from your friend. I have two questions: 1) Does the fact that Kennedy inspired Vic put pressure on you to make Vic as likeable (at least to Kennedy) as possible so she won't be insulted? 2) Would you ask Kennedy to pose for the cover picture? In other words, is she the vision of Vic you want your readers to have, or would you prefer your readers to imagine her for themselves? I don't mean to imply a right or wrong answer to that--I don't think there is. I have an opinion, but that's just my opinion.

    Thanks for sharing, Liz!

    1. Ha, no it it doesn't put pressure on me. Although Vic looks a LOT like Kennedy in my head, she has a much different personality. As for your second question, I hadn't thought about that. I might--I'm sure she'd love that. If there were to be a person on the cover, I'd want it to be Kennedy rather than a model for a stock photo, that's for sure.

  2. The picture of Kennedy is very inspiring - lots of emotions and we don't even get to see her eyes :D

  5. That's a great picture! For me, the character comes first in my head, so it's really hard to find a picture that matches it.

    1. It's funny you should say that. Vic showed up in my head first. It wasn't until Kennedy has this photo taken that I realized she looked like Vic.

  7. Both gorgeous pictures, Liz! The second one (from your honeymoon) is perfect. I totally get that "coming in to one's own" vibe from it. Very cool!

  8. Great photos! I have such a hard time finding photos of real people to fit my idea of my characters. So fantastic that you found one!

  9. The second picture is really interesting, because there's something a little creepy/disturbing about it to me. Maybe that's just because it's on the brain!
