The Class of 2012: Best in Show (YA Superlative Blogfest)

This has been an awesome week of sharing favorite books and reading about favorite books. One of the things I love most about this online writing community is the love we share for the stories we read. Thanks to everyone for stopping by this week. On to the final category!

Thursday, December 20: Best in Show

  • Favorite Cover: Shadow and Bone I really love illustrated covers, and the way this book's cover combines elements of the story--light and darkness, stag horns, etc.--is absolutely perfect.
  • Cutest Couple: Ana and Sam, Incarnate.
  • Most Likely to Succeed (Or, pick a Printz Winner.): This one is so, so hard. I think I'm going to have to go with The Raven Boys.
  • Most Likely to Make You Miss Your Bedtime (The book you just couldn’t put down!): Insurgent
  • Best Repeat Performance (Your favorite sequel or follow-up.): Insurgent
  • Favorite Finale or End of Series Novel: Didn’t read any of these!
  • Romance Most Worthy of an Ice Bath: The Darkling and Alina, Shadow and Bone. I mean, let's be honest.
  • Breakout Novel (Your favorite book by a debut author.): Shadow and Bone
  • Best Old-Timer (Your favorite read of the year, published BEFORE 2012.): I mostly read debuts this year, but I did start the Mortal Instruments, and I'm loving it. So I'll go with City of Bones.
  • Most Likely to Make a Grown Man Cry: This is Not a Test. If you haven't read it, you're probably thinking, "Liz. It's a zombie book." If you have read it, then you totally get this.
  • Most Pleasant Surprise (The best book you didn’t think you’d like, but totally did.): Pandemonium. I didn’t like Delirium as much as I’d hoped, but I loved the sequel.
  • Most Creative Use of a Love Triangle: Pandemonium
  • Sleeper Hit (Book you found so awesome you wish it had been hyped more.): Incarnate
  • Favorite Outlier (Your favorite middle grade or adult 2012 book): N/A
  • Pick your own category—Favorite damaged character: Ronan Lynch, The Raven Boys.

  1. Totally agree with you "Most Damaged Character" category. That boy just needs a really long hug. It's funny, I didn't have a best end of series novel either. Most of the series I'm reading are only partway in right now. I suppose if I'd gotten to REACHED before now (it's sitting on my shelf), I might have been able to list it by default. Ah well. SHADOW AND BONE probably should have made it under more categories on my list than it did, it was just that good. :)

    1. Same with me on Reached. But I just didn't get to it.

  2. Wow, there's really no competing with Ronan in that category, is there? Maybe Ever Davies, from SKINNY by Donna Cooner--she's put herself down for so long, the voice inside her head has taken on its own persona. But Ronan is just so EPICALLY broken...he's gotta be the winner here. Hmmph--some prize! Poor guy.

  7. I love the cover for SHADOW AND BONE; one of my all-time cover faves. And if the number of times I've seen it on these lists today is an indication, THE RAVEN BOYS is really going to succeed (or already has)!

  8. I'm extra intrigued about THIS IS NOT A TEST, now! Also, I haven't read any of the CITY OF BONES books and I feel like I'm missing a major series. A number of my students read/have read them. :-)

  9. Ok, I REALLY need to read Shadow and Bone if there is an ice bath-worthy romance in it.

  10. PANDEMONIUM is a great choice for the Love Triangle category... That one didn't even cross my mind! I can't wait to see how that whole situation pans out in REQUIEM. I know how *I* want things to end. :)

  11. I ALMOST picked Pandemonium for love triangle, but I was worried about spoilers, so I picked Shadow and Bone, instead.

On that note, I think Alex is probably going to be pretty damaged after all he's undoubtedly been through, and I'm sure that last page won't help ;)
