What's Up Wednesday

“What’s Up Wednesday” is a weekly blog hop by Jaime Morrow and Erin Funk. From Jaime: It’s similar in some respects to the Currently… post, but it’s been whittled down to only four headings to make it quicker and more manageable on a weekly basis. Be sure to visit Jaime's blog to add your post to the link list!

What I'm Reading: I finished up Unhinged and reviewed it over the weekend. It was lovely in every way I expected it to be. Trying to decide what to read next. On the list: Infinite (the final book in the Incarnate series), Dangerous Girls, or The Killing Woods.

What I'm Writing: Still working through beta revisions. I really want to finish these by Sunday before I go out of town for a trade show. I'm about halfway through so we'll see if that's doable. Then it's on to polishing up my query letter and doing a final read-through. Also giving it to my husband to read.

What Inspires Me Right Now: I get the daily emails from Story People (Brian Andreas), and I found one in my inbox that has really stuck with me:

I've always liked the time before dawn because there's no one around to remind me who I'm supposed to be, so it's easier to remember who I am.

What Else I've Been Up To: I have four new tires. While my bank account isn't terribly happy about it, the car drives much better. Beyond that it's been a work-heavy week as I gear up for my client's biggest trade show of the year while simultaneously trying to fight off getting sick. I'm ready for it to be the week after next so I can breathe again :)

Badass Books: Unhinged

Guys. Guys. Holy wow.

I'm going to do my very best to give you a good review of Unhinged by A.G. Howard without including any spoilers of either this book or the first in the series Splintered. Because I don't want to ruin that one for you if you haven't read it. And if you haven't read it, well just go do that right now.

I'm serious.

Image from Goodreads. Don't click through unless you want Splintered spoilers.

Why I read it: Splintered was one of my top three reads last year. I was completely satisfied with everything in that book from character growth to love triangle resolution to steamy steamy steamy kisses. So of course I had to read this one.

ZOMG Yes! This is going to be the most vague description ever, but I'm okay with that. I really don't want to spoil Splintered for you. I find myself, once again, amazed by this author. This story was beautiful from the writing to the plot to the characters. A.G. Howard brought new depth to the relationships in this story and created new growth arcs. And, of course, she brought back my favorite: Morpheus.

I think my favorite piece of this second book was how she continued to develop his character and show that, while he is selfish and manipulative, there's more to him than that. I'll just leave it at that.

Also--all the things I loved about the first book, especially where the love triangle is concerned? Pretty sure A.G. Howard read my review, laughed maniacally, and decided she wanted to torture me. I mean this in the best way possible.

Also, also--even if you haven't read any Lewis Carroll (like me), that's okay. She does a great job making you feel like you know enough of those stories to get this one.

MOAR PLZ Guys. I finished the last book and thought, "I'm okay with this. I don't need more from this series if there isn't more. But if there is, well obvs." But this time? I need the third book immediately. I'm going to go cry in a corner and worry and fret until that day comes.

A.G. Howard gets ALL THE CHIWEENIES!

What I'm Reading: I started Unhinged this weekend, and oh my word am I loving it. I'm trying to read it slowly. In fact, I'll be trying to read all books a little more slowly this year. I have this horrible habit of tearing through books, and then when sequels come out I can't remember a thing. I'm hoping this new week-long read rather than day-long read will help with that.

What I'm Writing: I've been making some updates to my Civil War story thanks to the super helpful notes from my beta readers. I'm still on track for my March submission goal, so we'll see if that continues!

What Inspires Me Right Now: The word "boldness." The idea of taking action, of moving forward, of stepping into the unknown, even if it's frightening.

What Else I've Been Up To: Right now I'm dealing with a flat tire. Currently I'm stuck at the Volkswagen dealership because my used car did not come with the proper locknut to get the flat off and put the spare on. So I had to have my car towed and am now waiting for them to get it off and put the spare on. Then it's off to Firestone.

What's Up Wednesday

What I'm Reading: I went on a major reading binge over the Christmas holiday, and now that I'm back at work I'm flailing because I don't have time for ALL THE READING. I'm planning to start Unhinged by A.G. Howard tonight or tomorrow.

What I'm Writing: Still working on my Civil War story, tentatively titled STARS & STRIPES. Currently reading through beta notes, making adjustments, adding some scenes, taking some out. Maybe...maybe I'll be on submission by March. That's my goal. We'll see if I can pull it off :)

What Inspires Me Right Now: Beyonce. Is that silly? I've been seeing the "You Have As Many Hours In A Day As Beyonce" posts show up on Tumblr, and while I don't have her money or resources, it's still inspiring. So here's to kicking ass this year. Or at least trying.

What Else I've Been Up To: We finally have another account executive in my department at work, so my stress level has gone way, way down. As a result, I've been enjoying life a whole lot more and getting to spend more time with my husband. So we've been eating well, playing games, and doing what best friend/lovers do. So it's been good.
