RSW Update #3

Ready. Set. WRITE! is a summer writing intensive--hosted by Katy UppermanAlison MillerJaime Morrow, and Erin Funk--that encourages goal-setting and accountability, and provides an opportunity for us to cheer each other on wherever we’re at in our writing—planning, drafting, revising, or polishing.

1. How I did on last week’s goals
Success! I wrote for a minimum of 15 minutes every day and got a few hours in on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday for a total of 5,793 words this wek! I just crossed the 10,000 word mark and one of my major turning points.

2. My goals for this week
Sticking with last week's goal. Write every day.
Stretch goal: I would love to be at 17,000 by next Monday (average of 1,000 words a day).
Also, I find outlining scenes before I write them helps a lot.

3. A favorite line from my story
The old wooden steps creaked under my feet and filled me with that sinking feeling that I wasn’t alone. If that ghost had followed me out of the cemetery, maybe she’d take up residence here. Then I wouldn’t have to fake a haunt.

4. The biggest challenge I faced this week
I struggled with words. I wrote some pretty crappy sentences, but I had to push myself to keep going. You can't fix what you never wrote.

5. Something I love about my WIP
Best friends. Strawberry cream slushes. Murder.

  1. You can't fix what you never wrote. TRUE WORDS. Crappy sentences are just a necessary evil of drafting :) Now I'm craving a strawberry cream slush, and I don't even really know what that is.

  3. I write crappy sentences all the time. But there's always a few diamonds and that line you shared is a gem! Love it!

Also, yay for writing every day! Keep it up!

  4. You did really well this week, Liz! Awesome that your goal from last week is working so well for you. I need to get back to outlining a scene just before I write it too. I've done it in the past and found it super helpful. Loved the snippet you shared, too. Totally creepy! Good luck this week! :D

  6. Nice work with your goals this week! I struggled with the same issue of crappy sentences when I was writing the first draft of my WIP, but now that I'm at the revision stage, I'm glad to have words on the page to fix. Good luck this week!

  7. First drafts are made for crappy sentences, so let them flow! Sounds like a fun WiP. 'I enjoyed the excerpt. The MC sounds great :)

  8. Haha, I love this: "Best friends. Strawberry cream slushes. Murder." I hope it ends up being your tagline. I struggle with crappy sentences sometimes, too. It's like, when I write every day I run out of vocabulary or something. But that's what revisions are for! Good luck this week :)
